In recognition of the national shortage of qualified respiratory nurses, NSHI has established an Academy to support healthcare professionals develop their clinical skills to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.
Respiratory diseases are amongst the greatest causes of death, often mis-diagnosed or not treated in line with National guidelines
The NSHI Academy offers external training and education to clinical staff supporting the management of patients with Asthma and COPD.

Spirometry Training

NSHI are listed as a training provider on the ARTP website.
A one­ day refresher course to support Health Care Professionals upskill in performing and reporting spirometry.
A two ­day training course, delivered by expert ARTP registered Nurse Advisors, to support Health Care Professionals to prepare for the ARTP   assessment, ultimately leading to ARTP spirometry registration.

Diagnosis and Management of Respiratory Patients in Primary Care

RCN Accredited until 8 October 2024 Accreditation applies only to the educational content and not to any product. RCN cannot confirm competence of any practitioner

These RCN accredited courses are delivered over 6 months and include 3 days teaching time and  approximately 300 hours of self study, similar to a Level 5 Diploma.

Course Content: Asthma
Day 1 – Anatomy & Physiology and Pathophysiology of Asthma. Discussion of NRAD and has your practice changed the way they manage patients with asthma.
Day 2 – Assessing and diagnosing asthma and investigations to support diagnosis.
Day 3 – Acute asthma. Asthma attacks and exacerbation management. Asthma in special circumstances. Performing asthma reviews remotely and face to face.
Course Content: COPD
Day 1 – Anatomy & Physiology and Pathophysiology of COPD. Symptoms, causes and risk factors. Understanding Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.
Day 2 – How to assess and diagnose COPD. Differential diagnosis. Investigations to support diagnosis. Pharmacological and  nonpharmacological management.
Day 3 – Recognising and managing exacerbations. Selfmanagement
strategies. Performing a COPD review, remotely and face to face. How to recognise a deteriorating patient.
Assignment: both courses
Case Study relating to a patient you have reviewed to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the therapy area.
