Diabetes
Diabetes remains a significant public health challenge in the UK, affecting over 4.3 million people, with an estimated 850,000 more potentially undiagnosed.

The impact of diabetes is profound, contributing to 184 amputations, more than 770 strokes, 590 heart attacks, and 2,300 cases of heart failure every week. The financial burden on the NHS is equally staggering, with at least £10 billion spent annually on diabetes care, accounting for approximately 10% of its total budget.

Alarmingly, nearly 80% of this expenditure is directed toward managing complications, and in some hospitals, over a quarter of beds are occupied by diabetes patients. Recent National Diabetes Audit data highlights a concerning decline in the number of individuals receiving essential diabetes checks, particularly in areas of higher deprivation, a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing these challenges requires a targeted and proactive approach to ensure effective support for those affected by diabetes across the UK.
