As National Nurses Day approaches, it’s time to shine a spotlight on the remarkable contributions that our nurse team bring to our business and to healthcare services across the UK.
We take a moment to recognise and appreciate the invaluable role nurses play in our lives, particularly in times of crisis and uncertainty. In 2024, amidst ongoing global challenges, the significance of nurses’ unwavering commitment to care and compassion is more apparent than ever.
International Nurses Day is celebrated on 12th May each year to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale. The theme for 2024 is Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care. The ICN has chosen this focus with the aim to reshape perceptions and demonstrate how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits.
We have seen time and again how financial crises often lead to budgetary restrictions in healthcare, typically at the expense of nursing services. This approach overlooks the substantial and often under emphasised economic value that nursing contributes to health care and society as a whole.
Policymakers, health care administrators, and even the general public are often unaware or misinformed about the return on investment that adequate funding in nursing can provide, especially in financially turbulent times. Drawing from the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and recognising the increasing threat to the health of populations around the world due to conflicts, the climate crisis and financial instability, we believe the time is right to advocate for a shift in perspective and policy.
